"To me this is breath. Boddhisattva, British Museum.
Every form, every touch of this sculpture is alive. Breath pouring through.

I don’t have a picture of the crucifixion, but of course you have seen crucifixions thousands and thousands of times. Crucifix is the outgoing of breath. The Christ has lances and through these lance-cuts, breath will flow out. Collapse of breath. Inhibition. The Jesuits - St. Ignatius de Loyola developed a system of spiritual exercises where each Jesuit would at least once in their life go through one month of exercises and in the third week, the exercises would include reflecting on Christ, the suffering of Christ and the disintegration of life - and there you can imagine considerable inhibition of breath taking part in the people who do these exercises. The Jesuits wore
hair shirts - they flagelated, or they used methods for punishing the body.

The total contrast to this culture, to this approach to life"
