"Mechanisation of farms cuts across the breathing land: Firstly hedge rows are discarded, they are an impediment to tractors. These demand large expanses of land in which to operate. The loss of hedge rows brings about the disappearance or migration of life. We are now in movement towards an equivalence, or a symmetry; a land which has been shorn of vital, protective breath, overshadowed by a sky shorn of its protective layer. Two destroyed entities - earth and heaven - faced against each other and locked in a kind of life and death struggle. What man has achieved is a flattening out and this is the most extreme form of that".
